How estate planning with our firm works
A clear, guided process from your first conversation to a fully funded plan.
1. Consultation
We discuss your family, your assets (home, accounts, retirement plans, business interests), and what you want to happen if you become incapacitated or pass away. Bring any existing estate planning documents. The first 30-minute consultation is free, in person, by phone or by Zoom video.
2. Plan design
Irina recommends the documents that fit your goals. For many San Diego homeowners that is a revocable living trust, a pour-over will, a durable power of attorney for finances, and an advance health care directive. Families with special circumstances — a child with special needs, a non-citizen spouse, a blended family — may need additional provisions.
3. Fees
Estate plans are prepared for a flat fee, agreed in advance, so you know the cost before work begins. Probate matters are billed hourly. We will explain the fee for your situation during your consultation.
4. Draft review
You receive drafts, ask questions and request changes. Every document is explained in plain English.
5. Signing
Documents are signed with the formalities California law requires — for example, two witnesses for a will (Probate Code § 6110) and notarization for trust and property documents.
6. Funding your trust
A trust only avoids probate for assets that are titled in it. We prepare the deed for your San Diego home and guide you through retitling accounts and updating beneficiary designations.
7. Keep it current
Review your plan after marriage, divorce, a birth or death in the family, a move, or a major change in assets — and periodically even when nothing seems to have changed. Existing clients and new clients with an existing plan can request a plan review.
